Exciting Days

The Language of Computation

Join us in Reggio Emilia, home of remarkable pedagogical practices, for a hands-on exploration of powerful ideas for educators inspired to make the world a better place for children.

"The Language of Computation" is rooted in the belief that the future is computational, children are natural mathematicians, and that computation enriches the learning possibilities for all.

When

Monday - Thursday 14 - 17 April, 2025

Where

Reggio Emilia, Italy

Who should participate

Pk-12 educators & teacher educators interested in learning to combine the powerful ideas of the Reggio Emilia Approach®, project-based learning, and computation in meaningful ways for the future.

Why Reggio Emilia?

For decades, progressive educators around the world have looked to Reggio Emilia for inspiration and to celebrate the remarkable potential of each learner. CMK has shared leading educators from Reggio Emilia during five of our summer institutes and now invites you to learn with us in this remarkable location.

Dream

Setting for Collaboration

"Nowhere else in the world is there such a seamless and symbiotic relationship between a school's progressive philosophy and its practices." – Howard Gardner

A joyful Learning adventure

Learning-by-Doing

In addition to conversations with educators from Reggio Emilia, the Constructing Modern Knowledge faculty will support computationally-rich hands-on learning adventures for participants

Fertile New Ground

Just as children in Reggio environments engage in reciprocal research with teachers, parents, the community, and their evolving experiences, a focus on computation creates new opportunities for reciprocity and the development of powerful ideas.

Networking

Learn with educators from around the world in one of the most inspirational, supportive, and dynamic small cities in the world.

Develop relationships to last long after the institute.

Great Speakers

Atelieristas, pedagogistas, and other leading educators from Reggio Emilia join the Constructing Modern Knowledge team to to explore the Reggio Emilia approach, computational possibilities, and the ways to ensure childhood agency over an increasingly complex and technologically sophisticated world.

Italian/English translation will be provided during conversations.

Reggio Emilia

The small city of Reggio Emilia is medieval and modern, Italian and global. More than a half-century after rebuilding the community with a remarkable focus on the rights and potential of even the youngest child, Reggio Emilia continues to evolve and attract educators dedicated to making the world a better place for children. Quite simply, Reggio reminds the world of what's possible.

Rich Conversations

The region of Emilia Romagna is the epicenter of the slow food movement. The ethos of care, deliberation, and attention to detail is everywhere. Participants in our institute will luxuriate in time to break bread, form bonds, and engage in conversations to inspire years of future personal development.

Constructing Modern Knowledge

WORLD-CLASS LEARNING-BY-DOING

About Constructing Modern Knowledge

Since 2008, Constructing Modern Knowledge has been recognized as the gold standard in creating high-quality learning-by-doing experiences for educators from across the globe. After hosting 15 annual summer institutes in the USA, CMK is creating exciting new learning adventures such as this opportunity for collaboration in Reggio Emilia.
Absolutely not! Although the Reggio Emilia Approach® emerged from a network of public infant and toddler centers and preschools, there is much to learn from educators at all levels from their long tradition of sophisticated and subtle approaches to teaching. The additional focus on computation and computers as material expands the relevance of this work through adulthood.

The wise educators of Reggio Emilia believe that it is irresponsible to build walls between children and their world. It is the responsibility of adults to offer opportunities for children to engage constructively with modernity and use all sorts of materials, including computational ones, to construct knowledge, create, collaborate, and solve problems. While much of what children do with “technology” is passive, we seek to empower constructive uses.

Registration is extremely limited for this unique event. Click on any of the registration buttons or links on this web site to confirm your place in the institute.
We have worked for years to make this collaboration in Reggio Emilia a reality. There is no guarantee that it will ever happen again. Don’t miss out!
